Ukhrul: A Bomb Disposal Squad who arrived from Imphal on Tuesday safely disposed the suspected explosive material that was found in the right pocket of Rajen Konsam’s jacket. The material has been established as a gelatin stick without its fuse or degree. The suspected explosive materials was discovered when a mobile forensic team from Imphal carried out its investigation.
A concrete mason by profession, Rajen Konsam is well known to most of the people in Ukhrul Town and he has been staying in Ukhrul for more than 20 years. He had been divorce three times.

Rajen’s body was found inside the crematory complex managed and run by Hindu Samaj Ukhrul at Konghang Ngayi about 1 Km from Ukhrul Town and half kilometer from Ukhrul-Jessami National Highway 202. Khayiashat – the place where the deceased was staying, and Konghang Ngayi – the place where the body of the deceased was discovered is almost about 3 Km apart in distance.
The impact of the explosion tore off a huge portion of his left chest and abdomen. His body was discovered in the morning by passerby. Ukhrul Police received the information at around 8:15 am on Tuesday. On receiving the report, Ukhrul Police had rushed to the spot and took stock of circumstance surrounding the site where the body was found. Accordingly, a case has been registered by Ukhrul Police.

A 5 member team of mobile forensic experts from Imphal led by Bilashini Chanu, Scientific Officer, Mobile Forensic Unit, Imphal East visited the spot and carried out necessary investigation and documentation on Tuesday. During their investigation, another object, suspected to be an explosive item was found in the right pocket of the deceased’s jacket.
The concerned authorities recovered one Nokia mobile phone, one cigarette gas lighter, 5 inch long nails and a packet neatly wrapped in a piece of cloth and tied properly by a rope on the spot.

The bomb squad from Imphal arrived and verified the object, which turned out to be a gelatin stick. The bomb squad has safely destroyed the gelatin stick on Tuesday night.
Speculation is brewing with different theories as to how Rajen died. However, preliminary investigation suggests that Rajen died because of an injury inflicted by a powerful explosion.
The dead body being kept at Ukhrul Police Station will be taken to Imphal for post mortem tomorrow, according to Police.

It is worth noting that explosion of bomb at Ukhrul Headquarters is not uncommon given the few incidents in the recent past. A bomb exploded on March 21, 2023, at around 3:40 pm inside the Mini Secretariat Complex, Ukhrul. The Mini Secretariat Complex of Ukhrul which host the offices of Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police and other departments was not spared.

On 17 September 2013, the office of TNL- apex body of Tangkhul tribe was also targeted and the office windows, doors and chairs were badly damaged.
In 2013, there were record of 8 bomb blast in just two months (October and November).

On 18 November 2013, at around 2:05 pm, a powerful IED bomb rocks Ukhrul – Jessami road, 3 Km away from the Ukhrul Town. Around 50 GREF Workers were on the vehicle, they were heading towards Ukhrul Town from their GREF CAMP, situated 4 km (approximately) away from Ukhrul Town. 4 GREF workers were seriously injured and the vehicle was badly damaged.

On 17 September 2014, at around 5:30 pm, a bomb exploded at Viewland and killed AS. Dinah (Former President of Tangkhul Shanao Long) and a 23 year old Miss Lansophy Tangvah, both from Nungbi Khullen.
On 25 Janauary 2023, a bomb blast at Gandhi Chowk, Ukhrul injured many people including a lady doctor of Ukhrul District Hospital.
On 20 March 2023, an improvised IED bomb was planted at the office of PHED Ukhrul. Fortunately, it failed to explode
On 3 April 2023, five people were injured when a bomb exploded in Viewland Ukhrul at around 6:25 pm near Viewland Church.

On November 11, 2022, at around 6:15 pm, a hand grenade was found lying on the roadside of Viewland Zone-I Bazaar, Ukhrul, Manipur. The grenade was suspected to be hurled at the bazaar by unidentified person(s) targeting human casualty. Fortunately, it failed to explode.
On 13 December 2022, an improvise hand grenade exploded inside the office compound of Zonal Education Office, Ukhrul, at around 4 pm.
