Ukhrul: Six Police Stations across five districts in Manipur have been declared as “Disturbed Areas” under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958, in an order issued on Thursday. The order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is effective immediately and will remain in place until March 31, 2025, unless rescinded earlier.

The six police stations affected by the directive include:
1. Sekmai Police Station in Imphal West District
2. Lamsang Police Station in Imphal West District
3. Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East District
4. Jiribam Police Station in Jiribam District
5. Leimakhong Police Station in Kangpokpi District
6. Moirang Police Station in Bishnupur District

The decision follows an October 2024 security review that identified a sustained threat of ethnic violence and insurgent activity in several parts of Manipur foothills, particularly around the borders of Bishnupur-Churachandpur, Imphal East-Kangpokpi-Imphal West, and Jiribam districts. The declaration under AFSPA grants special powers to the armed forces, allowing them to conduct operations and take preventative action in these areas with limited legal impediments.
The Ministry has stated that the order will be subject to regular review and may be modified based on changes in the security situation.
