Ukhrul Observe 10 Years Of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao

Ukhrul, Jan 22: The District Administration, Ukhrul District in collaboration with ICDS Cell, Ukhrul, One Stop Centre, Ukhrul District and District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Ukhrul on Wednesday launched off the programme to celebrate 10 years of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme. The celebration will culminate on 8 March 2025 on the International Women’s Day.

The main objectives of the BBPP scheme are preventing gender-biased sex-selective elimination, ensuring survival and protection of the girl child, promoting education and participation of the girl child, as well as improving Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) by two points every year, improvement in the percentage of institutional deliveries or sustained at the rate of 95% or above, 1% increase in 1st Trimester Ante-Natal Care (ANC) Registration per year, to check dropout rate among girls at secondary and higher secondary levels, and raising awareness about safe Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM).

The programme started with a bike rally which was flagged off by Kajaigai Gangmei, the ADM of Ukhrul District. This was followed by a programme at DRDA Hall, Mini Secretariat Complex.

“Today, we are here to commemorate ten years of ‘relentless efforts to protect, educate and empower the girl child in India’ aligning with India’s vision of Vikshit Bharat, i.e., Developed India by 2047. Indeed our country, our state, our district, we as a community can only develop if the women and girls are empowered to enjoy the same opportunities and rights that our men and boys are entitled to. A nation cannot move forward while leaving behind almost half of its population” stated Kajaigai Gangmei.

Chonchuirinmayo Luithui, Central Administrator of OSC Ukhrul, stated that “Ten years ago, on this day, the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme was launched by the honourable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi in Panipat Haryana. It was a response to the declining Child Sex Ratio and the alarming gender imbalance. It was a government policy that became a national movement to prevent gender biased sex-selective elimination and to promote the survival, protection and education of the girl child. The BBBP scheme is now integrated with Mission Shakti, a comprehensive program for women’s safety and empowerment, for implementation during the 15th Finance Commission period from 2021-2022 to 2025-2026, expanding its scope through collaborations between multiple ministries including the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and the Ministry of Minority Affairs with the Ministry of Women and Child Development overseeing its implementation.”

She also highlighted that Tangkhul women play essential roles in their community as caregivers, nurturers, and earners, among other responsibilities. They are the backbone of their economy.

The gathering took a pledge to protect the girls which was led by ADM of Ukhrul. Signatures campaign was also organised where people from different walks of life participated.

Yursari Ngalung presented the theme song of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. The song was composed by Yursari and was released in 2020.

W. Shimreipam, District Programme Officer, ICDS Cell, Ukhrul, stated “Today’s programme will be followed by a series of events including sports week, school visits for menstrual hygiene awareness, cultural programmes, etc in the coming days”

The programme was attended by District Level Officers, teachers, women leaders and members of child care institutes.
