Manipur: Lilong Firing Case Death Toll Rises to Five; CM Announces Compensation, SIT Investigation

Imphal: One more individual belonging to the Meitei Pangal (Muslim) community who was injured in the Lilong firing incident under Manipur’s Thoubal district on January 1 passed away at Raj Medicity, Imphal on Wednesday morning, an official of the hospital said.

According to an official, the person who succumbed to his bullet injuries was among the 15 person injured during in the firing incident that took place at Lilong Chingjao. With this, the death toll from Lilong firing episode has risen to a total of five.

The latest deceased has been identified as Moulana Abdur Rajaque Meraimayum, 38, s/o (L) Md Zalaluddin of Lilong Dolaithabi. 

As per the official report, out of the 14 others injured, three of them have suffered critical injuries while another 11 persons suffered minor injuries.

Meanwhile, during a meeting with CSOs and leaders of Meitei Pangal community, chief minister N Biren Singh has agreed for ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh to next of kin of each of the deceased persons who died in the incident and a suitable government job each to deceased family in home guard, VDF or grade IV posts. Also, Rs 2 lakh each to those three persons who suffered major injuries and Rs 1 lakh each to those persons who suffered minor injuries.

The state government has also agreed to form an SIT to investigate the incident, led by an officer of the rank of IG.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the killing of five persons in the incident has also agreed to drop all forms of agitation in connection with the case. Meanwhile, as part of the MoU signed between the government ofManipur and JAC, Md Jakaur Rahaman has replaced N Tikendra Meitei as the officer-in-charge of Lilong police station. The transfer and posting order was issued by the Director General of Police, Manipur in the aftermath of the Lilong firing incident by a proscribed Meitei armed group.
