Arambai Tenggol Meets Manipur Governor; NRC, SoO Abrogation, Meitei ST Status, Border Fencing Among Key Points in MoU

Ukhrul, Feb 25: The Arambai Tenggol said it met with the Governor of Manipur and re-submitted a memorandum on behalf
of the people of Manipur, addressing their grievances on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters, the Arambai Tenggol Public Relations Officer (PRO) Robin Mangam Khwairakpam said that the meeting with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla lasted for an hour, during which a memorandum was submitted. “An understanding was established, but the fine details will be announced to the public soon,” the PRO said.

When asked whether any terms of surrender of the AT were discussed, the PRO, along with another senior member of the AT, responded by saying that certain conditions were laid out; however, it was premature to disclose them to the public at this point.

Furthermore, the PRO disclosed that four members of the AT attended the meeting with the Governor. He also added that the Governor assured the forthcoming of peace in the State. The PRO revealed that the Governor urged the AT to facilitate the ushering of peace in Manipur, restoring it to the state it was in before the conflict erupted.

The AT representatives declined to answer when asked whether the surrendering of all arms by Arambai Tenggol would be the solution for peace.

The following two primary points were placed before the new governor of Manipur.

1. The ethnic conflict that erupted on 3rd May 2023 has been ongoing for more than a year, resulting in numerous deaths, casualties, and the displacement of thousands of families from the Meitei/Meetei community.

2. The impact of this prolonged ethnic conflict must come to an end. However, the following points must be fulfilled in the interest of the general public:

Border Fencing

Implementation of NRC with 1951 as the base year

Deportation of all illegal immigrants to their native places

Abrogation of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) and stringent action against SoO-violating militants

Complete destruction of poppy plantations

No arrest or legal action against Village Volunteers, including Arambai Tenggol, by any Commission, Tribunal, Court, etc.

Reinstatement of ST status for the Meitei/Meetei community

The AT memorandum signed off by the PRO Robin Mangam Khwairakpam beseeched the Governor to exert pressure upon the concerned authority as well as the Government of India to resolve the conflict at the earliest.
