AGARTALA: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday appointed MLA Abhishek Debroy (44) as the new President of its Tripura Pradesh unit, with the formal order issued by BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh stating that the appointment takes effect immediately. The decision was approved by BJP National President Nitin Nabin.

The party’s decision to entrust Debroy with the role is being viewed as a significant step to strengthen the organisation ahead of the 2028 Assembly polls, with village committee polls and local body polls also in the queue. The appointment, according to sources, surprised several political circles in Tripura.

The reshuffle in Tripura is part of a wider organisational overhaul initiated by Nitin Nabin, who also appointed new state unit presidents for Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, signalling a generational shift across the party.

Who is Abhishek Debroy?

Born in 1982 in Kakraban, Gomati district, Debroy is the son of Himangshu Debroy. He completed his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka.

Debroy entered politics in 2001 through student activism and youth movements. Before joining the BJP in 2017, he held various positions in the NSUI, the student wing of the Congress, and later in the Youth Congress, as reported by The Shillong Times. After switching to the BJP, he served as President of the party’s Gomati district unit and later joined the state committee.

In the 2023 Tripura Legislative Assembly election, Debroy won the Matabari Assembly Constituency seat with 25,494 votes, a share of 51.06 per cent, defeating Congress candidate Pranajit Roy by a margin of 9,041 votes. He is widely regarded as a young leader popular for his connect with party workers at the grassroots.

A line of predecessors

Debroy succeeds Rajib Bhattacharjee, who now serves as a Rajya Sabha member. Bhattacharjee was appointed Tripura state BJP President on August 25, 2022, replacing Dr. Manik Saha, who had become state president in January 2020 and continued holding the party post even after assuming the office of Chief Minister. Before Dr. Saha, former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb had led the state unit.

Leaders congratulate

BJP National President Nitin Nabin said, “Hearty congratulations and best wishes to Abhishek Debroy on being appointed State President of Bharatiya Janata Party Tripura. Your efforts under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will give new momentum to organisational expansion in Tripura and help bring public welfare work to the last line of society.”

Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha said, “Confident that under his dynamic leadership and organisational vision, the party will grow stronger and continue working dedicatedly for the welfare of Tripura’s people. Wishing him a successful tenure ahead.”

Former Chief Minister and current Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb extended his sincere greetings and best wishes to Debroy, expressing full confidence that his organisational efficiency and capable leadership would make the party even stronger.

Outgoing state president Rajib Bhattacharjee said, “I am confident that under his dynamic leadership and strong organisational vision, the party will grow stronger and continue to work dedicatedly for the welfare and progress of the people of Tripura.”

Bhattacharjee added that under the leadership of Nitin Nabin, the party would together fulfil the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Viksit Bharat and Viksit Tripura.

Former Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik also extended her greetings to Debroy, saying she was fully confident that his organisational efficiency and capable leadership would further strengthen the party in Tripura.
