Shillong: The successful containment of the African Swine Fever has prevented it from spreading across Meghalaya.

This was informed on Tuesday by Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong who is also the Minister in charge of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department. “There has been no increase in the (cases) of African swine fever,” he said in this regard.

Tynsong also informed that, so far the spread of the disease is being contained within the 19 villages, which have been declared as ‘epicentres’.

The 19 villages include 4 in West Jaintia Hills district, 5 in Ri Bhoi district, 7 in East Khasi Hills district, 2 in East Jaintia Hills district and 1 in West Khasi Hills district.

He also said that the state is yet to have a single case of cattle being infected with the lumpy skin disease.

“However, since we cannot be complacent, I have instructed the Director of the Veterinary department to be vigilant and pro-active on this by going down to the grassroots as awareness has to be given to all farmers,” he said.
