At least 8 Security Personnel including 3 BSF Jawans injured in fresh gunbattle in Moreh

Imphal: At least 8 security personnel sustained injuries in a fresh violence which broke out at Indo-Myanmar border town Moreh, Tengnoupal District on Tuesday morning.

A combined team of Manipur Police Commando, Border Security Force, Assam Rifles and Gorkha regiment personnel who were carrying out search operations at various places including Canan Veng, Chavangphai and S. Mojol in the border town were reportedly attacked by armed miscreants. According to reliable sources, the ensuing gunfight lasted for around 6 hours from 6:30 am till 12:30 pm.

Five personnel of Manipur Police Special Commando unit and three BSF jawans sustained injuries in the gunfight. Four injured commandos and one injured BSF jawan were airlifted to Imphal on a chopper for treatment at RIMS Hospital. The injured commando personnel brought to RIMS hospital are identified as Maibam Thoiba from Yairipok Top, Chabungbam Herojit from Kondompokpi Mayai Leikai, Kamei Gaihemlung from Ragailong and Mangsatabam Premkumar from Luwangsangbam and the BSF Jawan is identified as Head Constable of 192 BSF Battalion Rabindra Singh from Rajasthan.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh today visited RIMS hospital and checked on the conditions of the injured security personnel. The Chief Minister also spoke with the families of the injured personnel.

Speaking on the sidelines of the visit, the Chief Minister said the situation in Moreh is unfortunate. Pointing out the intensity of attack during which the personnel were injured, he said that the involvement of foreign mercenaries from Myanmar is highly possible in the ongoing situation in Moreh. Fortunately, the personnel were not seriously injured, he said.

N Biren Singh continued and said that the Central forces and State forces are countering the armed mercenaries and added that search operations and combing operations are widely on going and that reinforcements have also been sent. The Chief Minister also expressed his firm commitment to the people of the State that the government will not succumb to threats and pressure, and will take necessary measures to counter such terrorist activities.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister also visited Raj Medicity and met those injured in Lilong incident on Monday. Stating that Manipur is passing through a very crucial period, the Chief Minister questioned the rationality in inciting hatred and fighting among the people instead of unitedly facing those who are trying hard to break the State apart. He reiterated his stance to come out strongly against anyone taking the law into their own hands, and said that the government will not remain silent and take actions against anyone taking the law into their own hands. He said in the event that AFSPA is reimposed by the Centre in view of the repeated disturbances created by various elements, those creating these disturbances should be held responsible.

N Biren Singh called upon the public to identify the enemies of Manipur and to face them unitedly. Urging people against taking the law into their own hands, the Chief Minister appealed to the people to inform or complain to the authorities concerned if they find anything suspicious for the relevant authorities to take necessary actions.
