At Least Five Reported Dead in Kamjong Violence; Police Deny Station Was Burnt

KAMJONG: At least five people have reportedly been killed and several others injured in separate incidents amid two days of violence in Kamjong district, Manipur. Meanwhile, Kamjong Police have dismissed reports circulating on social media that the Kamjong Police Station was burnt.

According to sources, three Kuki individuals and one Tangkhul civilian were killed in separate incidents during the violence. The deceased woman has been identified as Domkhonei Touthang, wife of Lallenmung Touthang of Chassad. The identities of two other suspected Kuki armed individuals have yet to be officially confirmed, although sources indicated that one of them was from Chassad village.

In a separate incident today, a villager from Ningchau village in Kamjong district was reportedly killed in an ambush allegedly carried out by suspected Kuki militants. He was identified as Achanko Ningshen. He is survived by his wife and two young children.

Sources also reported that at least three Tangkhul persons sustained minor injuries during the confrontation.

Meanwhile, another person, identified as Sandeep Rai from the Gurkha community, was reportedly killed along the Mahadev–Toloi road in the forest cultivation area of Chepu Yaolen. Further details surrounding the incident were not immediately available.

On being enquired about the video circulating that Kamjong police station was burnt, Kamjong OC Worchipem Ngalung told this correspondent that it was a false report.

At least eight houses and about twenty shops have also reportedly been burnt during the violence, according to sources.

While reports of casualties and property damage continued to emerge, official confirmation of the identities of all the deceased and the overall extent of the damage is awaited.
