Makui Asang, Tapon villages in Kangpokpi reportedly attacked; casualties feared

UKHRUL: Makui Asang and Tapon, two Liangmai Naga villages along the IT (Imphal-Tamenglong) Road in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, reportedly came under attack by suspected Kuki armed groups on Saturday.

Unconfirmed sources said one person was killed in an ambush at Tapon village, while two others sustained serious injuries. Another person was reportedly killed at Makui Asang. Reliable sources informed Ukhrul Times that intense firing was continuing at the time of filing this report.

Saturday’s reported attacks come amid a series of incidents targeting Liangmai Naga villages in Kangpokpi district over the past three months.

The continuing attacks has forced Liangmai Naga villagers to flee their homes and seek shelter in Senapati. On September 5, 37 more villagers from Tapon had been evacuated to Senapati, taking the total number of displaced villagers to 82. The displaced families were moved to relief facilities amid continuing security concerns and the destruction of homes in the affected villages.

On August 14, two Liangmai Naga civilians were reported killed and two others injured at Langka (Niulong). On August 27, four Naga civilians were reported killed in an ambush between Makui Ashang and Thanamba, followed by another attack at Teikhang on August 31, in which three civilians were reportedly killed and four critically injured, with houses also burnt.

On September 1, Pipuram Makui, Naga Tapon (Old) and Naga Tapon Namsan reportedly came under attack. Eighteen houses were reported burnt at Namsan and 10 at Old Tapon, while properties and churches were also damaged. Further attacks were reported on September 23 in five Naga villages across Kangpokpi and neighbouring Noney district, including Makui Chamriupiu, Langka and Thanamba in Kangpokpi. Houses were reportedly burnt in some locations, forcing residents to flee to nearby forests.
