Athuan Abonmai Killing: JAC Demands NIA Probe, Serves 48-hrs Ultimatum to State Govt

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the brutal murder of Athuan Abonmai in a charter of demands submitted to Manipur state government in a memorandum served 48-hours ultimatum starting from Saturday (25 September).

In a press briefing to media on Saturday, the convener of the JAC, Majabung Gangmei said it resolved to go ahead with the imposition of 48 hours road blockade on National Highways 29 and 37 from September 27 midnight till September 29 midnight on the expiration of the 48-hours ultimatum.

The JAC meeting also resolved to to launch democratic agitation in the form of sit-in-protest and rally and further called a state wide 24-hours total shutdown from September 29 midnight till September 30 midnight if the state government failed to fulfill the charter of demands submitted by the JAC within the 48-hours. It also demanded suspension of Tamenglong DC and SP.

In the charter of demands submitted to the state government through a memorandum last September 23, the JAC demanded an order for a high-level National Investigating Agency (NIA) inquiry on the conspiracy of abduction, torture and subsequent murdered of Athuan Abonmai under IPC 302, 364.

The JAC furthermore stated in a release on September 24 stated that the meeting also resolved to demand replacement of the chairman of enquiry committee, IG (intelligence) K. Radhashyam Singh while adding that his negligence, inefficiency and ineffectiveness had created security lapses which has led to the abduction and subsequent killing of Athuan Abonmai. Therefore, such a doubtful character official heading the Enquiry Committee may not bring the desired result, adding that assurances made by the chief minister during the press conference held on September 24 must be translated into visible action. stated the release.
