AGARTALA: In what signals growing international interest in India’s Northeast region, Australia’s High Commissioner to India and Ambassador to Bhutan, Philip Green OAM, met TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarman in Shillong for a discussion centred on the regional leader’s advocacy efforts for the northeastern states.
Green shared details of the meeting on his officials X handle on Friday, describing it as a productive engagement. “An excellent conversation today in Shillong with Tripura-based Pradyot Manikya Deb Barma, Chair of The Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA Motha), on his work as an advocate for India’s Northeast,” the Australian envoy wrote.
The meeting brought together one of Australia’s most senior diplomatic representatives in South Asia and one of the Northeast India’s most prominent political figures. Pradyot Debbarma, who leads TIPRA Motha, has in recent years positioned himself as a consistent voice for the rights and aspirations of indigenous and northeastern communities, drawing attention both within India and beyond.

The choice of Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya and a regional hub for the Northeast, as the venue for the conversation adds weight to the meeting’s broader regional significance. That a senior Australian diplomat sought out Pradyot specifically to discuss northeastern advocacy reflects the growing profile that the region and its leadership are acquiring in international diplomatic circles.
TIPRA Motha, the party Pradyot chairs, has been a significant political force in Tripura, particularly among indigenous communities, since its formation. The party scored a decisive victory in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) election this year.
