Imphal: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Sunday said stringent action will be taken against those responsible for the mob violence in Thoubal’s Moijing area in which at least 10 police personnel were injured and as many as eight police vehicles were damaged.

On Friday night, a combined team of Heingang police station and Imphal East district police commandos that went to apprehend suspects in a murder case was allegedly attacked by a large number of residents of Moijing village of Thoubal district, wounding as many as 10 police personnel besides damaging eight police vehicles.

One of the suspects apprehended by the police escaped during the melee.

Stringent action will be initiated against the people of the village while imposing collective fine to compensate the damages caused to the government properties (police vehicles), the chief minister said while talking to reporters on the sideline of a function at chief minister’s secretariat in Imphal today.

The chief minister strongly condemned the incident while terming it as “barbaric act”.

Giving obstruction to the police in discharging their duties is against the law, Biren said. Besides, attacking the police personnel with stones and other deadly weapons is an act of taking law into their hands, he also said.

More than 11 people allegedly involved in the mob violence were arrested. They have been remanded to police custody.

They will not be released until the escaped suspect is arrested, the chief minister said. The residents of Moijing should hand over the escaped suspect to the police, he further said.

“No one should take law into their own hands. All involved in the mob violence will be arrested. I have ordered the police to arrest all involved in the incident,” he added.
