Tripura BJP Accuses Congress and CPI(M) of Hypocrisy Over Ambedkar Legacy

Agartala: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tripura Pradesh Committee’s “Samvidhan Gaurav Abhiyan” rally on Friday turned into a scathing attack on the Congress and CPI(M), accusing them of hypocrisy and political opportunism regarding Dr. B.R. Ambedkar‘s legacy. The rally, which began at the BJP state office and ended at Paradise Chowmuhani here, saw leaders from both sides of the party delivering fiery speeches, making it more about confronting the opposition than simply celebrating the Constitution.

BJP state president and Rajya Sabha member Rajib Bhattacharjee led the charge, mocking Congress and CPI(M) for suddenly glorifying Baba Saheb Ambedkar. “Congress, the same party that didn’t even allow Dr. Ambedkar to win elections or enter Parliament, is now parading his photo like they were his greatest supporters. And CPI(M), the party that once tore up ballots to keep Ambedkar from winning, is now marching with his image. This is the height of political drama and hypocrisy,” Bhattacharjee said.

During the rally Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder, BJP women’s wing leader Papia Dutta, and several other party leaders and karyakartas were present. However, it was Bhattacharjee’s fiery remarks that stole the spotlight.

He further criticized Congress for its disrespect toward Ambedkar, claiming, “For years, Congress insulted Ambedkar and his contributions to the Constitution. They didn’t let him become a Member of Parliament and ensured he never won elections. Now, suddenly, they’re holding his photo and pretending to care about his legacy. It’s laughable!”

The BJP leader also took aim at CPI(M) for their “sudden affection” for Ambedkar. “CPI(M) is dreaming of establishing dictatorship in India, and now they’re marching with Ambedkar’s photo, hand in hand with Congress. They should be ashamed of themselves. These are the same people who sought to erase Ambedkar’s contribution from history and now pretend to be his biggest admirers.”

Bhattacharjee did not miss the opportunity to remind the crowd of the Congress’s role in altering the Constitution. “Former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru-led government amended the Constitution, removing references to India’s culture and traditions. And then there was Article 370 in Kashmir, which divided the nation. Ambedkar opposed it, but Nehru did not listen. And today, Congress wants us to believe they are the true custodians of Ambedkar’s vision? Please!” he scoffed.

He also attacked the Congress for undermining the contributions of Syama Prasad Mukherjee, stating, “Mukherjee was the first martyr of independent India. He opposed Article 370, and for his efforts, Congress and their allies conspired against him, leading to his tragic death. The BJP, on the other hand, honoured his contributions and fought for a united India. In 2019, under Modi’s leadership, we finally scrapped Article 370.”

Referring to the opposition’s sudden support for Ambedkar, Bhattacharjee said, “These parties think they can fool the people by marching with Ambedkar’s photo. But the public is smart. They know who truly respects the Constitution and its creator, and who is just pretending.”

The rally ended with the BJP reaffirming their commitment to Ambedkar’s vision, the Constitution, and a united India. Bhattacharjee emphasised, “If anyone has truly respected the Constitution, it’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His government is the one that has genuinely worked to honour Ambedkar’s vision.”
