SHILLONG, APRIL 20: The BJP will emerge as a “much bigger political player” in Meghalaya by 2028 and continue expanding its footprint across the Northeast, BJP national secretary and Meghalaya in-charge Anil Antony said today.
“In 2028, you can expect the BJP to be a much bigger political player in the state of Meghalaya also,” Antony told reporters.
He pointed to the party’s growth in the region over the past few years.

“In the last few years, across the Northeast, the BJP has been expanding its footprint. Many years back in the region, the party did not have a single seat. Now seven of the eight states are governed by the NDA, including Meghalaya,” he said.
“In four states, BJP is the largest party, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Tripura, and in other states, the party is also expanding its footprint. So you will definitely see the party expanding and getting more representatives here,” Antony added.
On the party’s ambition in the state, he stated, “Like in any other states, the party is aspiring to be number one in Meghalaya also.”
On the postponed Garo Hills Autonomous District Council polls, Antony said the BJP was poll-ready and expects to improve its tally.
“We are very confident. The ADC elections in Garo Hills have been postponed but the BJP was fully prepared for that election before the unfortunate turn of events. We were one of the first parties to announce candidates for the election,” he said.
“In 29 seats, in almost every seat except three or four, we have announced our candidates, and our candidates are on the ground. Last time, we had two seats there. This time, we will definitely improve our performance,” Antony said.
