Ukhrul, Aug 1: A burglary was reported on Tuesday night at an under construction house in Raikan, a locality towards Ukhrul Central Jail with approximately 90 households.
The house, located in the outskirts of town, still partially under construction, belongs to Mathingmi Kazingmei of Lunghar village. Speaking to Ukhrul Times, she said the break-in occurred through the back window of one of the bedrooms.
“All our carpentry tools, including a full toolbox and other expensive equipments, and a newly purchased mattress worth Rs. 38,355 were stolen. The mattress is king-sized, so the miscreants must have been more than two people, as it typically requires at least two people to lift it,” she said.

The total loss is estimated at around Rs. 80,000, as per the family.
According to Mathingmi, the kitchen area remains under construction, and she had planned to move into the new home later this year.
“I went to the house around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday to continue work,” she said. “To my horror, all the equipment, including the new mattress, was gone.”
Distressed by the incident, Mathingmi Kazingmei expressed her shock that such a crime could happen in Raikan locality. “I couldn’t imagine that such a burglary would take place here. I have no clue who the miscreants are, but I want to take this incident as a warning for my neighbors to be cautious,” she said. “It’s heartbreaking to think that even among our own Tangkhul people, someone could do this.”

When asked whether she and her family plan to pursue legal action, Mathingmi said they had decided against it. “What good will come to those who make a living by stealing from others?” she said.
Local residents have not yet identified any suspects, and no official complaint has been filed with the police at the time of reporting.
