Carjacking incident at ISBT Khuman Lampak at gunpoint

Ukhrul, May 31: In a shocking incident that took place on May 29 at ISBT Khuman Lampak in Imphal, a car was allegedly stopped and snatched away by three unknown persons. One of the assailants allegedly carried a Kartoos double barrel.

Soreichan Panguinao (28) from Mapum village of Ukhrul District along with his two friends were in the car of one Gracestone Shinglai. The car was acquired from Dr. Melory Renthlei wife of R Lalthanliana from New Checkon on April 22, 2023.

The incident occurred around 1:30 pm when the car arrived at ISBT Khuman Lampak. “A person walked up to our car and directly asked for the car key, to which Soreichan asked why. The person, who the three in the car said was a Meetei remarked, Noi Tangkhul di Kuki mateng pangraka. Chabi tu piyu! (You Tangkhuls are helping the Kukis, hand over the car key!). Another person came from behind with a Kartoos double barrel and demanded we step out of our car pointing the gun on us,” recalled Sorechan.

The three unknown persons forced them out of the car and threw out their luggage and other belongings. While at the state of panic for the three travelling in the car, one of the persons snatched the car key, and the assailants fled towards Lamlong Bridge.

According to Soreichan, they were traveling in a white Hyundai I20 Active car with registration number MN 01 AK3444.

Soreichan Panguinao filed a complain at Imphal Police Station on May 30. Consequently a First Information Report (FIR) was filed under the number 531(05)2023 IPS u/s 397/34 IPC & 25(1-B) A. Act. Rocky Laishram, Sub Inspector was given the charge to investigate the case.

Soreingam and his other two friends were left stranded and helpless on the spot. They have expressed their outrage and have condemned the severity of the crime committed against them.

Urging the concerned authorities to take necessary legal action against the unknown assailants, ensuring that justice is served, they appealed that security measures should be reevaluated to prevent similar incidents in the future in the area.
