16 Arrested in Assam for Illegal Cattle Slaughter During Eid, CM Himanta Confirms

Ukhrul, Jun 8: As many as five cases of illegal cattle slaughter were reported across Assam during Eid-ul-Zuha, prompting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to warn that the law will be enforced strictly, regardless of religion.

Per Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on social media, cattle parts were recovered from multiple locations including near Cotton University in Guwahati (Kamrup Metro), Dhubri, Hojai, and Sribhumi (Bagargool). Police also busted five illegal slaughter sites — three in Cachar district (Gumrah, Silchar, and Lakhipur) and two in Karimganj district (Badarpur and Banga).

A total of 16 people have been arrested so far, nine from Cachar and seven from Sribhumi, in connection with these incidents.

“While our Constitution guarantees the right to religious freedom, it equally upholds the rule of law and public order,” Sarma said.

“We are committed to preserving communal harmony, but not at the cost of lawlessness or cruelty,” he added.

CM Sarma further mentioned that strict action will be taken against all violators, irrespective of faith or background.
