Center Sanctions Rs 18 Crore to Promote Manipuri Language and Script

Imphal: In a significant boost to the cultural heritage of Manipur, the Government of India has sanctioned Rs 18 crore as the first installment for the promotion of the Manipuri language and script.

The latest development was announced by Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba on X, stating, “The Modi government allocates Rs 18 crore as the first installment to promote our language, Manipuri, and script, recognizing their use for more than 2,000 years in our Royal Chronicles.”

“Positively, we are approaching very near to achieving the status of a classical language for Manipuri,” added MP Leishemba, the titular king of Manipur.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving due recognition to the Manipuri language and its script by allocating Rs 18 crore as the first installment for their conservation and promotion.

The Chief Minister also thanked MP Leishemba for his continued efforts to elevate the status of Manipuri as a classical language.

“I sincerely thank and deeply appreciate the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri @narendramodi ji, for giving due recognition to the Manipuri language and its script by allocating Rs 18 crore as the first installment for their conservation and promotion,” CM N. Biren Singh said on X.

“I further extend my appreciation to the Hon’ble Rajya Sabha MP, @MaharajaManipur, for his continued efforts to elevate the status of Manipuri as a classical language,” he added.

“Besides the promotion of Meiteilon, the state government has been making efforts to protect the tribal dialects spoken in the state through various courses, activities, and programs,” the Chief Minister further stated.

Earlier, the Manipuri language was recognized under the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill 2024 in four districts of Assam: Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Hojai.
