Chandel: Lamkang Khunjai VA Alleges Substandard Maintenance of PMGYS Road Project

Ukhrul, March 17: The Lamkang Khunjai Village Authority under Chandel District has raised serious allegations regarding the substandard maintenance of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) road project connecting Purum Chumbang to Lamkang Khunjai.

The concerned Village Authority has alleged that despite significant investments and a five-year maintenance agreement, the road has deteriorated significantly, causing immense hardship for local villagers.

In a detailed project lapses issued in a press note on March 11, 2025, the Lamkang Khunjai VA stated that the road project, part of Package No. MN02125 under Phase XI, spanning a distance of 4.70 kilometers was initially slated for maintenance from March 13, 2019 to September 12, 2020.

The press note stated that the maintenance period under the project executed by contractor Liyakat Ali under the supervision of the Executing Agency, EE/PIU-III (CDL) RED/MSRDA, Government of Manipur, with funding provided by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India was later extended from September 12, 2020 to September 13, 2025.

The VA has reported that the road has fallen into severe disrepair, with broken culverts and inadequate maintenance. “Despite the significant investment in this project, the road has fallen into disrepair, with broken culverts and inadequate maintenance. This has caused immense hardship to the villagers, who rely on this road for their daily commute, transportation of goods, and access to essential services.”

Furthermore, Lamkang Khunjai Village Authority has urged the authorities to take immediate action to address these concerns and ensure that the road is properly maintained. It also requests the Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India, to intervene and direct the contractor to rectify the defects and complete the maintenance work as per the agreed terms.

“We hope that our concerns will be taken seriously and that necessary actions will be taken to restore the road to its original condition”, added the Village Authority.
