Shillong: The Civil Society Women Organization (CSWO) has alleged that consultation on the amendments to the Forest (Conservation Act, 1980) was not done and was not translated to local languages of Meghalaya.

In a statement issued today, CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing informed that a reply was received on the RTI filed regarding the consultation of the amendments to the Forest (Conservation Act, 1980).

She said the CSWO also met the PIO cum the Conservator of Forests (HQ), Office of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & HoFF, Meghalaya, Shillong, and “we were told that the Consultation was not done.”

“On meeting the PIO, we were told that there has been a reply to the Government from this office.  The Consultation of the amendments in the Forest (Conservation Act, 1980) was also not translated to the local languages in the State,” she added.

Kharshiing asserted the need for the reply to also be uploaded in the website and shared through the local news, so that the public would see what the reply from this office of the Government of Meghalaya was and what the amendments to be made in the Forest (Conservation Act, 1980) are.
