Chandel, September 4: The Chandel Naga People’s Organisation (CNPO) has strongly condemned the alleged abduction and brutal torture of a young villager from Choktong by cadres of the Pro-Democracy Revolutionary Army of Myanmar (PDRAM), calling it an “inhuman act” that threatens peace and security in the region.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the CNPO expressed outrage over the assault on Th. Merangshing Charanga (23), son of Th. Angrung Charanga. The victim went missing on September 1 and was found two days later with severe injuries after reportedly being subjected to third-degree torture.

“The barbaric physical assault on an innocent villager is a big threat to our safety and peaceful living,” the CNPO said, warning that the fear and trauma from such incidents would only worsen the already fragile situation in Manipur’s border areas.

The organisation urged higher authorities to ensure swift justice for the victim and his family, while reiterating its stand against violence that undermines community harmony.

Earlier, the Choktong Village Authority had also submitted a memorandum to the Maring Uparap Assembly (MUA), demanding immediate legal action and justice for the victim. The letter condemned the act as “barbaric” and called for urgent intervention from authorities to prevent further violence.

The Choktong Village Authority has urged immediate legal action after a 23-year-old villager was allegedly abducted and brutally assaulted by cadres of the Pro-Democracy Revolutionary Army of Myanmar (PDRAM).

According to a memorandum submitted to the Maring Uparap Assembly (MUA) on Thursday, the victim, identified as Th. Merangshing Charanga, son of Th. Angrung Charanga and resident of Choktong village, went missing on September 1 around 1 PM while villagers were at work. Despite a massive search effort by the community, his whereabouts remained unknown for nearly two days.

Charanga was eventually found in the early hours of September 3 at around 4:30 a.m., bound and severely injured. The village authority stated that he had been subjected to “physical assault and torture to the third degree” by the PDRAM.

In a letter signed by Choktong Village Authority Chairman Th. Peter, the incident was described as a “barbaric act,” calling on the MUA to ensure that justice is delivered swiftly. The authority further appealed for “necessary action to the culprit as deemed fit as soon as possible.”

The memorandum was also copied to several Maring civil society organizations, including the Rilram Area Maring Organization, Maring Students’ Union, and Eastern Maring Nupuiya Ynglam, signaling a collective push for accountability and justice.
