IMPHAL/UKHRUL: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has called on the state government to ensure adequate relief assistance and expedite the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs), including Naga families affected by the ongoing crisis in Manipur.

Speaking at a press conference at the COCOMI office in Lamphel on Sunday, COCOMI spokesperson M. Dhananjoy stressed that the plight of Naga IDPs must receive due attention, particularly in terms of relief distribution, rehabilitation and permanent resettlement.

He said the crisis that erupted on May 3, 2023, following attacks allegedly carried out by Chin-Kuki narco-terrorist groups against the Meitei community, had displaced thousands of people and caused widespread loss of homes and properties. He added that Naga families had also been affected by the prevailing situation and alleged activities of armed groups in the region.

Dhananjoy urged the government to ensure that Naga IDPs, along with other displaced families, receive sufficient relief materials and are provided with proper arrangements for safe and dignified resettlement.

He said COCOMI had been consistently highlighting the difficulties faced by displaced communities and had also made appeals concerning the concerns of the Naga community.

Questioning the progress of the government’s rehabilitation initiatives, Dhananjoy said that despite repeated assurances from the Chief Minister and other government representatives, no significant fresh measures had been introduced beyond the initiatives already announced.

He also referred to the resettlement initiative at Dolaithabi, pointing out that some displaced families continue to live in temporary shelters even after the construction of houses for IDPs. He urged the government to ensure proper housing facilities for those who are yet to be rehabilitated.

Dhananjoy maintained that assurances alone would not address the hardships of displaced families and called for tangible action to ensure that all IDPs, including those from the Naga community, receive adequate assistance and are resettled without further delay
