Imphal, June 5:  While decrying the conditional re-opening of the NH-2 by Committee of Tribal Unity (COTU), Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) on Monday appealed to the truckers and transporters not to ply their vehicles on the highway.

Addressing a press conference at its office in Imphal today, COCOMI coordinator Jitendra Ningomba said that the organisation is against the re-opening of NH-2 temporarily that too with certain conditions.

He informed that COCOMI had urged Union Home minister Amit Shah during his recent visit to the state to open the national highways uninterruptedly.

However, the Centre could not re-open the highways despite having a large number of Central forces to do the same.

He alleged that the Centre has failed to take up measures to ensure free passage of vehicles on the stretch passing through Kangpokpi district.

“How can the truckers and transporters use the highway when the security forces could not provide a secure environment for the free passage of the vehicles?” he asked.

During the press conference, the COCMI announced that it will stage a human-chain protest on the streets across the valley districtsJune 6 night, starting from 8 pm to 9 pm.

While staging the protest, Ningomba asked the people to raise slogans against demand for abrogation of Suspension of Operation (SoO) with Kuki militants and also against narco-terrorists besides withdrawal of Assam Rifles from the state.

He said that the COCOMI has also submitted a fresh memorandum to Union Home minister Amit Shah, through the security advisor Kuldiep Singh, urging him for “immediate action against Kuki militants who are behind rampant attacks on the unarmed civilians”.

“These terrorist groups are continuing their aggression and provocative attacks towards the Meitei villages unabated”, he accused.

In the memorandum, the COCOMI put down the details of the “series of attacks by Kuki militants despite the appeal of the Union Home minister to shun violence and to surrender weapons that they have collected from the security forces”, he said.
