SHILLONG: The condolence service of 27-year-old Yapan Sharon, who drowned at Anjuna Beach, Goa, was held on Thursday at Yapan Home, Shillong, following the recovery of his body on Wednesday.
Sharon, from Nungbi Village, Manipur belonged to the Tangkhul Naga community. His family, however, is based in Shillong. He completed his schooling at St. Anthony’s School, Shillong, higher secondary education from Ambience Public School in New Delhi, and his Bachelor of Arts from Cluster Innovation Centre, Delhi University.
Sharon was pursuing his diploma in Culinary Arts at the Only Chef School of Culinary Arts, Guwahati, when an internship training programme led him to the Postcard Hotel in North Goa. During a day off, he, along with three of his friends, ventured to Anjuna Beach when a strong ocean current swept him away on Tuesday.
Following a day of search operations, his body was recovered from the shoreline on Wednesday evening at around 6:20 pm, opposite Vista Praya Restaurant, Anjuna. The body is currently undergoing post-mortem.
For the past two days, members of the Tangkhul Katamnao Long Shillong and the Christian Youth Society Shillong provided comfort and companionship to the family through hymns and choral singing.
The condolence service was attended by family members, friends, representatives of the Dorbar Shnong of the locality, members of Tangkhul Khararnao Long Shillong, Tangkhul Katamnao Long Shillong, the Christian Youth Society Shillong, Tangkhul Baptist Church Shillong and the Naga Elders Forum, who gathered to pay their final respects to the deceased.
During the service, the deceased’s mother, Pamshang Sharon, described him as a brave soul who never feared challenges, attributing his death to that very bravery. Recalling childhood memories of his antics, she shared how her love for him only grew through all his mischief. His father, Standhope Sharon, also spoke about how his firstborn had strengthened his faith and made his life complete.
