Imphal: Authorities of Manipur government on Wednesday confirmed cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in a piggery farm in Langmai-IV (Peaceland) village of Noney district of Manipur.

Following the detection of the infection of pigs at the farm, the Noney district administration today ordered containment measures to prevent further spread of the animal disease in the area.

The district administration has also banned sale of pigs, pork and feed in the area under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animal Act 2009.

The order of the district administration also notified the pig farm as “control areas for ASF” while imposing the ban.

Noney district magistrate Joseph Pauline Kamson further declared 1 km radius of the village (Longmai-IV) as the infected zone and the 10 km radius for infected premises as the “Surveillance Zone.”

Anyone found violating any of the containment measures will be deemed punishable under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animal Act 2009, the order warned.

The department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Noney district, in collaboration with the sub-divisional magistrate Noney has taken up immediate measures to control, contain and eradicate ASF in the infected zone, the order informed.

Sources said that after reports of an unusual death of pigs in Longmai IV village, officials of the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry rushed to the infected pig farm on November 14 to investigate the matter.

The officials collected clinical samples and sent to NERDDL Laboratory Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, Khanapara on November 19 through courier where the tests conducted confirmed the ailment as AFS.

This is not the first case in which an outbreak of ASF has been reported in Manipur. Earlier, the outbreak of the disease was reported in Kamjong in June this year. Later, it was reported in Kakching district.
