Senapati, April 1: In an epoch-making event, the curtain has risen on the Women’s Self-Defence Training at Mount Everest College, Senapati, aimed at equipping female students with essential self-defence techniques and resilience.

This pioneering initiative, the first of its kind in the college, was organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and the Women’s Cell of Mount Everest College in collaboration with the Directorate of University & Higher Education, Government of Manipur.

The 17-day training programme for female students and staff will not only focus on physical defence techniques but also cover legal and psychological aspects of personal rights, ensuring mental preparedness as part of the curriculum.

The training will be conducted by experts from various fields:

1. Physical Training: Facilitators from the Combat Athletics Training Academy, Senapati.

2. Legal Awareness: Adani Komuo Mao, Advocate and Legal Counselor from the One Stop Centre, Senapati.

3. Psychological Guidance: Dr. Paveine Paulina Y, Clinical Psychologist.

The inaugural ceremony, held on 1 April at the Chapel Hall of Mount Everest College, was graced by Gonmei Meithuanlungpou, Vice-Principal of MEC, who warmly welcomed the facilitators and participants. He described the programme as a historic milestone for the college and urged students to make the most of the opportunity.

“Wisdom is the greatest weapon to fight against the enemy,” he emphasized.

Niomchung Jatak Chiru, IQAC Coordinator and Convener of the programme, delivered the keynote address, stressing the importance of women’s self-defence training in today’s world, where safety remains a pressing concern.

“Women are disproportionately affected by violence, harassment, and intimidation in our society. It is our responsibility to take charge of our own safety,” he said.

“However, this programme goes beyond just self-defence techniques. It is about empowering women to take control of their lives, build confidence, and develop a sense of self-worth. It is about creating a community of strong, supportive women who can uplift and inspire each other.”

The training, which includes hands-on practical sessions, will conclude on 17 April 2025.
