Shillong, Jan 28: Customs sleuths have seized meth tablets worth over Rs 12 crores and destroyed drugs worth Rs 191.32 crore.
A statement issued by the Customs today informed that, on receipt of specific information, Officers of HQ Preventive, Customs, NER, Shillong along with CPF Silchar intercepted 2 scooties at Rangirkhari Point, Sonai-Silchar Road, Assam on the evening of January 26.

The scooties were coming from Churachandpur, Manipur and proceeding towards Silchar, Assam.
On thorough rummaging, 6 polythene wrapped packages were found deeply concealed inside each scooty, it also said.
The orange colour tablets found inside were tested with the NDPS Field Test Kit which confirmed the presence of methamphetamine in the recovered substance.

“The contraband drugs weighing 12 kgs having the value of about Rs 12 crores have been seized along with the vehicles and 2 persons were apprehended under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985. Further Investigation into the case is under progress,” customs officials said.
In the last week, as part of a Drug Destruction Drive, the Commissioner of Customs, NER, Shillong destroyed seized drugs at Shillong, Guwahati, Imphal, Dimapur and Karimganj.
A total of 15.90 kgs of Heroin, 92.776 kgs of methamphetamine tablets, 355.40 gms of cocaine and 1567.161 kgs of ganja totally valued at Rs 191.328 crores were disposed of by destruction in a secure and environmentally responsible manner, ensuring that these harmful substances are permanently removed from circulation, custom officials said.

Customs said it is committed to combating all types of cross-border crime involving smuggling of drugs and narcotics, gold, cigarettes, wildlife articles, fake Indian currency notes, import-export frauds and trade-based money laundering. Customs works in close partnership with various other law enforcement agencies.
