Imphal: Lone, All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) legislator Tongbram Robindro and former Congress MLA Yengkhom Surchandra joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday as pre-election defection continues in Manipur.

The poll-bound state has been witnessing political defections well ahead of the elections to the 60-seat Manipur Assembly and the same continues even after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced poll dates.

The BJP felicitated the sitting MLA along with former MLA Yengkhom Surchandra in a function held at state BJP head office in Imphal today.

The felicitation function held today at BJP head office in Imphal was attended by top leaders of BJP like Union minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Pratima Bhoumik, Assam Agriculture minister, Ashok Singhal who is also co-in-charge (election) of BJP state unit and Manipur unit BJP president, A Sarda Devi.

Speaking on the occasion, A Sarda Devi ruled out any occurrence of problems for BJP in the state after the announcement of the party’s candidatures for the ensuing poll.

It can be noted here that the BJP is facing a herculean task of multiple numbers of intending candidates in each assembly constituency lobbying for the party ticket.

“There may be some disgruntlement among the intending candidates of the party when the list of candidates is declared. But, it will not give a negative impact to the party”, she said.
