DLSA Ukhrul, U/HSL Observe International Women’s Day with Focus on Legal Empowerment

UKHRUL: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Ukhrul, in collaboration with the Ukhrul/Hunphun Shanao Long (U/HSL), observed International Women’s Day on Sunday at the U/HSL Office Hall in Awontang. Themed “Give to Gain,” the event brought together women leaders, legal experts, and community members to discuss the intersection of leadership, collective strength, and legal literacy on Saturday.

The program, moderated by AS Somaya, commenced with a solemn opening prayer, followed by a warm welcome and keynote address by Soyaphi Shaiza, Panel Lawyer for DLSA Ukhrul. Madam Veronica P. Zingkhai, Advisor to U/HSL, captivated the audience with a resolute opening statement: “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made.” Addressing the topic of “Women Supporting Women: Building Confidence, Leadership, and Collective Strength,” Zingkhai emphasized that empowerment is an intentional movement.

Zingkhai noted, “Women supporting women is a movement focusing on collaboration over competition. When we mentor and sponsor one another, we foster a culture of personal and professional growth that benefits the entire community.”

The second session, titled “Empowered in Law, Empowered in Life,” was spearheaded by Chihanpei PA (A LADC, Ukhrul) and Ningnim YL (Deputy, LADC, Ukhrul). Ningnim YL opened the session by stressing the liberating power of legal knowledge, stating, “Follow the rules, and the rules will guide you and empower you with incredible positive changes in your life.”

The legal experts outlined five critical pillars for women’s advancement—understanding one’s fundamental rights, utilising the resources provided by the DLSA, legal safeguards against discrimination and violence, leveraging laws to ensure fair workplace practices and participation in civic and political decision-making.

    The resource persons concluded by highlighting the essential functions of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA). As a statutory body, the DLSA Ukhrul remains committed to providing ensurance that financial barriers do not prevent women from seeking justice. educating the grassroots population on social legislation, Offering Lok Adalats for speedy and amicable settlements.

    The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Timwon L. Shimray, President of U/HSL, who expressed gratitude to the DLSA for their continued partnership in safeguarding the rights of women in the district
