Flash Flood Affects More Than 1,000 Households; Senapati Reels Under Darkness

Senapati, May 31: More than 1,000 households in low-lying areas have been affected by a flash flood that occurred last night. Two wooden bridges and two hanging bridges have reportedly been washed away, along with two cars that were parked in front of residential houses. A Tata 407 vehicle was also washed away and had not been found at the time of filing this report, sources said.

The District Administration, Senapati Town Committee, and colony village authorities spent a sleepless night carrying out rescue operations. Although no human casualties have been reported, many houses were washed away by the flood. The most affected areas in the district headquarters include Viewland Colony, River Colony, Bridge Colony, Yaopao Colony, Church Road Colony, and Old Monday Market Colony. Families in these areas fled for safety in the middle of the night. Affected residents stated that the water level rose so suddenly that they were unable to retrieve any belongings and had to flee for their lives.

Due to continuous rainfall since May 28, residents of Senapati district have been living without electricity. Sources mentioned that several electric poles were swept away, and the affected areas remain submerged in water, potentially delaying reinstallation by several more days. However, Senapati witnessed a decrease in rainfall on May 31.

The District Administration has set up temporary shelter homes at the ADC Conference Hall and the ADC Guest House. According to information received from the CEO of ADC, Senapati, around 80 individuals have taken shelter at the ADC Conference Hall. Additionally, six other community halls have been designated for the same purpose in and around the district headquarters.

It may be noted that most of the affected households have taken refuge with relatives and friends in and around the district headquarters. As a result, the authorities have not yet been able to determine the exact number of affected households at the time of filing this report.

Portions of the road along NH-2 were affected on the night of May 30 due to mudslides, leading to a complete cutoff for commuters. However, the debris was cleared early Saturday morning, and traffic resumed thereafter.

A team comprising the District Administration, Senapati, along with district CSOs, has been visiting the affected areas and distributing relief materials.

A medical team, led by the Medical Superintendent of the District Hospital, Senapati, has been providing free medical treatment to affected residents at the temporary shelter homes, along with the distribution of basic first aid medicines.
