Historic Karbi Anglong Agreement Signed

In what can be termed as a historic moment for Assam, bringing to end decades of violence, the Centre signed a tripartite Karbi Anglong Agreement which was signed on Saturday by the representatives of 6 Karbi Anglong groups and the government in the presence of home minister Amit Shah, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other eminent dignitaries.

The key points agreed upon as per Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India are: (1) Five militant organizations & more than 1000 armed cadres have abjured violence & joined mainstream (2) Special projects worth Rs 1000 crore allocated for for development of Karbi (3) Karbi Welfare Council to be set up for the development of Karbi people living outside Karbi.

This Memorandum of Settlement will ensure greater devolution of autonomy to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, protection of identity, language, culture, etc. of Karbi people and focussed development of the Council area, without affecting the territorial and administrative integrity of Assam as per PIB Govt of India.
