IMPHAL, Aug 17: Medics in government and private run healthcare set ups in Imphal refrained from all kinds of non-emergency services and joined in the nationwide protest against the rape and murder of a 31 year old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9 last.
As a result, OPD services at JNIMS, RIMS, and other government healthcare establishments were closed. Many private hospitals, including Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Langol and Raj Medicity, North AOC also did not operate their OPD consultations.

The medics who joined the protests wore black badges and hold placards which read as “We demand justice for the victim”, “Save the savior”, “Not born to be raped”, “Respect the white coat, respect life”, “No mercy to rapists”, “Hang the rapists”, “Justice delayed is justice denied”, “Don’t stain our apron” and “ Stop violence against women”.
Speaking on the sideline of a sit-in protest at the front of RIMS OPD by the faculties, doctors and PG students of the medical institution, RIMS senior doctore Dr Sunilkumar Leishangthem decried that the alleged gang rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was a horrific crime and highly condemnable by all.
He continued that the incident should not be taken solely for the doctors alone and must be taken as committed against the women and humanity as a whole.

“All the culprits involved in the crime should be arrested at the earliest and awarded capital punishment to prevent further occurrence of such crimes in the future”, he said.
He added that the government must formulate a stringent law to ensure the safety of the doctors and healthcare workers as violence meted out against medical professionals have become quite frequent across the country.
Similar protest was also held at the campus of the Churachandpur Medical College opened at COVID Hospital, Kyamgei in Imphal East.
