Shillong, June 18: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has urged the Meghalaya government to adopt stringent measures, including temporary internet shutdowns, to ensure the fair conduct of government job examinations.

The union cited multiple complaints alleging incidents of cheating through mobile phones during exams in certain areas.

In a letter to Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home, Prestone Tynsong, the JSU stated, “Implementing an internet shutdown for a limited period during examination hours can curb at least 50–60 percent of cheating activities that rely on online communication.”

The union expressed concern over the misuse of advanced Artificial Intelligence tools, noting that smartphones, smartwatches, and hidden devices can be used to access AI-based apps or chatbots that instantly provide accurate answers. “These tools give an unfair advantage and undermine the credibility of the examination process,” the letter said.

The JSU also emphasized the need for strict frisking and monitoring at exam centres. It called for rigorous search procedures at entry points and within exam halls to prevent the use of unauthorized materials or devices.

It further recommended the installation of CCTV cameras in all examination halls to deter malpractice and ensure accountability. “To enhance public trust, CCTV cameras should also be installed during interview rounds to promote transparency and eliminate unfair practices,” it said.

The union concluded that these measures, if implemented effectively, would benefit sincere job aspirants and help restore public faith in the recruitment system and the government’s functioning.
