UKHRUL: Chawangkining Naga village in Kangpokpi district came under prolonged firing on the night of September 15, with two houses completely burnt and several others damaged.

According to the Chawangkining Village Authority, the firing began at around 10:30 pm and continued until about 4:50 am on September 16.

The VA alleged that the attack was carried out by Kuki armed groups from the direction of Kholen Kuki Village, Sejang Kuki Village and West Haipi. It said no human casualties were reported.

The VA also said the attack took place despite the deployment of CRPF personnel in the area, and raised concerns over the delay in the arrival of additional reinforcement.

According to the VA, reinforcement reached the village only around 4:50 am, leaving villagers exposed to nearly six hours of firing. It said Chawangkining is located about 13 km from Kangpokpi district headquarters.

The Chawangkining Village Authority has sought a thorough investigation, strengthening of security arrangements, assessment of the damage and relief and financial assistance for affected families.

Meanwhile, the Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur (LNC-M), in a separate statement, also condemned the attack and alleged that Kuki militants operating from the Songtung Suspension of Operations (SoO) camp were behind the firing.

The LNC-M said several civilian houses were damaged and alleged that repeated distress calls from the village did not receive a timely response from the Kangpokpi district police.

It then called for legal action against those responsible and demanded action against the Songtung SoO camp, alleging that the attack originated from there.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack during the time of filing this report.
