IMPHAL, SEP 26: The Liangmai Naga Council, Eastern Zone (LNC-EZ), said today that it strongly condemned the “heinous attack” on Wilubou Marenmai, a resident of Khunkhu Naga village and truck driver for Thomson Gas Agency in Tamenglong district.
According to the LNC-EZ, on the evening of September 25, 2024, Marenmai was “violently” assaulted by two individuals who falsely accused him of supplying arms to Kuki militants. The assailants, who identified themselves as members of the UNLF, attacked him near the LPG Gas plant at Nongthombam Sekmai, under Sekmai Police Station, Imphal West, Manipur, it alleged. “This cowardly attack left him severely injured, with broken teeth and other physical trauma,” the LNC-EZ added.

This is not an isolated incident, said the LNC-EZ. “The neutral Naga community has long been subjected to harassment, physical violence, extortion, and threats from extremist elements, particularly along NH-2 and in the Imphal region,” it stated. “Meitei extremists, in particular, have crossed all boundaries by targeting Naga civilians who have played a pivotal role as peace advocates since the onset of the current conflict,” it added. “Our community’s neutrality and commitment to peace are being exploited by those who mistake our silence and goodwill for weakness. Such acts of barbarism and lawlessness have no place in today’s society and represent a grave threat to the peace and security of the Liangmai Naga people,” it also said.
The Liangmai Naga Council, Eastern Zone, then urged every Naga citizen to remain united and resolute in standing against “these violent forces that threaten our peace and security”.
The LNC-EZ then appealed to the UNLF and other militant groups to cease these unlawful activities that harm innocent civilians and create discord.

Moreover, the LNC-EZ called upon the state government to urgently introduce effective measures that ensure the protection of unarmed civilians, particularly those of the Naga community. The LNC-EZ also demanded swift action by law enforcement to apprehend the perpetrators of this crime within two days and to ensure they face the full force of the law. “Such actions are essential to restoring public confidence and maintaining peace,” it added.
The LNC-EZ then said it “tands firm” in its commitment to protecting the rights and safety of the Naga people and will continue to advocate for justice and peace in the region.
