Ukhrul, Sept 27: The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has voiced strong opposition to the recent extension of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in eight districts of Nagaland, as notified by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The Act has been extended for an additional six months in the districts of Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, and Peren, as well as specific areas under 21 police stations across five other districts.

In a statement, the NSF condemned the unilateral decision by the Government of India, which they believe disregards the long-standing demands of the Naga people to revoke the controversial law. The federation criticized AFSPA for its broad powers that they claim have been used to oppress their community for decades, undermining basic human rights and perpetuating fear among the populace.

Despite recent progress in Naga political dialogue, the NSF argued that the extension of AFSPA signals the Indian government’s unwillingness to recognize the aspirations and rights of the Naga people. They stated that the law continues to undermine trust and disrupt the peace process, which is crucial for resolving the Naga political issue.

The federation expressed deep concern over the fact that this extension was made without meaningful consultation with Naga civil society or representatives, raising questions about the Indian government’s sincerity in pursuing genuine peace and reconciliation.

The NSF reiterated its call for the immediate repeal of AFSPA, asserting that the continued enforcement of the law alienates the Naga people from the Indian state and complicates prospects for a peaceful resolution to their political struggle.

In response to this injustice, the Naga Students’ Federation pledged to intensify its efforts through democratic means of protest, urging all Naga citizens, civil society organizations, and supporters to unite against the oppressive law. They also called on international human rights organizations and the United Nations to take notice of the ongoing imposition of AFSPA, which has led to numerous human rights violations and suffering within the Naga community.
