Liangmai Naga Tribe Calls for Holiday Observance of Chaga Ngee on October 30

Ukhrul: The Liangmai Naga Katimai Ruangd, Manipur has extended warm greetings to the people on the occasion of Chaga Ngee, a post-harvest festival celebrated by the Indigenous Liangmai Naga Tribe. In a press statement issued by the Liangmai organisation, it said that the Liangmai Naga are a recognized Scheduled Tribe under the Constitution Order (Amendment) Act, 2011, predominantly spread across the districts of Tamenglong, Senapati, Kangpokpi, Noney, Imphal West, and Imphal East, with a population of around 70,000.

Chaga Ngee, celebrated during the month of Chaga Hiu, which usually falls in October according to the lunar calendar, holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Liangmai people. The post-harvest festival celebrated by the Liangmai Naga Tribe is a time to purify society and warriors; seek blessings from Tingwang, the supreme God; determine individual luck; giving thanks; and sanctify, said the Liangmai Naga Katimai Ruangd, Manipur.

It further said that recognizing the importance of this festival, the Government of Manipur declared October 30 as a restricted holiday in the state, following an order issued by the Governor on December 2, 2021.

In light of this, the Liangmai Naga Katimai Ruangdi has appealed to all educational institutions within Liangmai-inhabited areas to declare a holiday on October 30 in honor of Chaga Ngee. The union has further urged educational institutions across Manipur to exempt Liangmai students from attending classes on this special day, showing solidarity with the community.

The LNKR Manipur has requested maximum cooperation from educational institutions, calling for full compliance to ensure that Liangmai students can participate in the festival without any academic obligations.
