Kangpokpi: Liangmai Naga Students’ Union, Eastern Zone took out a mass rally today against the alleged assault and misconduct by Lailon Vaiphei Kuki Village residents on Liangmai people inhabiting Khonsakhul in Kangpokpi District.

The mass rally kicked off at around 10 AM from IGNOU Campus in Makhan Village till National Highway-2, Imphal-Dimapur road point. It may be recalled that an intense scuffle erupted between residents of Konsakhul and Leilon Vaiphei Kuki village in Kangpokpi District on March 27 and many villagers sustained injuries in the violence.

A large number of participants chanted various slogans demanding punishment of those personnel of Leimakhong Police Station who had allegedly assaulted Konsakhul villagers and condemning the residents of Lailon Vaiphei Kuki Village. They also held placards which read “Go Back Illegal-immigrants”, “We want Justice”, “Illegal-immigrants can’t be land owners” etc. A large number of Imphal West Police personnel kept a strict vigil during the rally to prevent any unwanted incidents. However, a heated confrontation occurred between police and the protestors when police prevented them from taking the rally down the National Highway. Eventually, the police managed to control the crowd and culminated the rally. There are no reports of any injuries.

Timothy Chawang, Chairman of Liangmai Naga Students Union, Eastern Zone said they took out the rally to show their condemnation of frequent interference and intimidation of innocent Khonsakhul villagers, including women and students, by the people of Lailon Vaiphei Village. He said they demand the arrests of those people of Lailon Vaiphei Village who were involved in the March 26 detention and assault of two villagers of Khonsakhul, setting ablaze their two-wheelers and destruction of one JCB vehicle, to book the police personnel of Leimakhong Police Station who had thrashed the two innocent villagers of Khonsakhul and to take measures against encroachment of lands by Illegal-immigrants.
He appealed to the Manipur government led by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh to book all the culprits and also take long-term measures to restore peace and harmony.
