Imphal: A man allegedly killed his two minor children and also tried to kill his wife before attempting to commit suicide in a tragic incident in Manipur’s Imphal West district on Saturday morning. The man and his wife were in separate hospitals in critical conditions following the incident that took place at Changangei locality under Lamphel police station of Imphal West district, around 7.30 am, the police said.

Police as well as local sources said that the accused identified as Chingtham Murphy (42), first attempted to murder his wife Abesana (40) with a knife. After escaping from her husband, Abesana cried out for help, following which other family members and neighbours rushed to the room, reports said. When they entered the room, the accused was found roaming in the room with a hammer in his hand while his two minor children – a four-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son – lay dead in a pool of blood on the bed.

Police suspected Murphy had killed his daughter by hitting with a hammer that was recovered from the room while his son by with a knife. The police recovered the hammer and the knife from the room.

No sooner had the people rushed to the room, Murphy attempted to commit suicide by cutting his own neck.

With critical injuries, he was rushed to RIMS hospital, Imphal. He is struggling for life in critical condition, a hospital source said.

His wife who sustained injuries on her hands and abdomen has been admitted at Raj Medicity hospital, Imphal. Her condition is stated to be out of danger.

Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.

According to family sources, since early morning, Murphy prevented his wife and children from going out of their room. At the same time, some members heard Murphy shouting that they would be “leaving” by this evening.

The family members added that Murphy used to act wildly whenever he came home drunk but he did it on rare occasions.
