Man shot dead at Bishnupur District by unknown assailants

Imphal: Unknown assailants shot dead a man at Kumbi Khuga Wangma in the wee hours under Kumbi Police Station in Bishnupur District on Saturday.

According to the police, the deceased person is identified as Khangembam Sanjoy alias Athoi alias Pambei (30) from Kumbi Setapur Maning Leikai.

The incident took place at around 3 am and the body was discovered by locals in the morning. Police and a team from the Manipur Forensic Science conducted an inquest before taking the body for postmortem examination. The police has registered a case in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, the proscribed Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) has claimed responsibility for the killing of Khangembam Sanjoy. According to a press note signed by RPF’s Publicity Assistant Secretary, Bangkim, the outfit maintained that they imposed a death sentence on Sanjoy due to his alleged involvement in raping a young girl at gunpoint in 2022.

The press statement suggests that despite evidence against Sanjoy, the police were unable to apprehend him, and he was free without facing consequences for his crime. Furthermore, the RPF’s statement also mentions that instances of mob lynching often arise due to inadequacies in the Indian legal system, where criminals are not adequately punished.
