Imphal: Rajkumar Somendro, a prominent Manipuri actor turned social activist has written a letter addressed to Amit Shah, the Home Minister of India, calling for urgent action to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur.
Somendro’s letter highlights the pressing need to address concerns of illegal immigration and ensure national security and stability in Manipur, a border state with Myanmar.

Citing historical challenges related to illegal immigration, infiltrations, and demographic transitions, Rajkumar Somendro, also popularly know as Kaiku, emphasizes the socio-economic, cultural, and political disruptions faced by the indigenous population of Manipur. The implementation of NRC, he argues, is essential to accurately identify Indian citizens and curb illegal immigration, thereby strengthening national security and promoting transparency in demographic governance.

Somendro also underscores the unanimous decision of the Manipur State Assembly to abrogate the Suspension of Operations (SoO) with Kuki militants, a move seen as crucial in bringing about peace in the conflict-torn state. He urges the central leadership to consider this decision and initiate peace dialogues with all indigenous stakeholders to ensure lasting peace in Manipur.
