Senapati, August 11: The “emergency presidential council meeting” of the United Naga Council (UNC) held today in Senapati, participated by presidents of the Naga tribe hohos under the UNC, resolved to “announce the mode of agitation and modus operandi within the 15 days’ time”. The meeting was held on the issue of the abrogation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the ongoing border fencing construction in “Naga ancestral homeland”.

The UNC then urged the Naga community at large to mobilize their resources, rally the community, and gear up for the challenges ahead.

Upon expiry of the 20-day ultimatum served to the Government of Manipur and the Government of India in regard to the issue of “unilateral abrogation” of Free Movement Regime (FMR) and construction of border fencing in “Naga homeland”, the United Naga Council (UNC) issued a call to action of all Naga peoples. As discussed and resolved in today’s “emergency presidential council meeting”, the UNC said they were left with no choice but to escalate “our movement against the government’s stance to implement border fencing and scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR)”.

In a statement made available to Newmai News Network tonight, the UNC said that, on the aforementioned issue, it has been placed on record that a series of agitations, demonstrations, public rallies and a number of memoranda and press statements have been registered by the Naga peoples to all the authorities of the government in democratic approach with all civility. “Yet, the indifference attitude of the government demands a stringent action to address and redress our grievances. For which, the UNC said it will announce the mode of agitation and modus operandi within the 15 days’ time”, it added.

Therefore, the UNC urged all its constituent units, subordinate units and associate units of the United Naga Council (UNC), All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), Naga Women’s Union (NWU), and the Naga community at large to mobilize their resources, rally the community, and gear up for the challenges ahead.

“We shall remain steadfast and committed to the protection of Naga rights, culture, and traditional ties and stand firm in our demands and fight for the future of our people”, the UNC further added.
