Imphal: The Congress party in Manipur on Sunday demanded taking up of immediate measures to rehabilitate people who have been rendered homeless due to a recent eviction drive.

A week ago, authorities of the state government had demolished 69 “illegal” houses constructed within Waithou Protected Reserved Forest in Thoubal district. Most of the families are taking shelter at relief camps opened by the local youth clubs and NGOs even though some of them are reportedly taking shelter in the houses of their close relatives.

A team of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) led by its president, K Meghachandra today paid a visit to the relief camps and extended relief materials as a part of celebration of 52nd birthday AICC leader Rahul Gandhi. While distributing the relief materials, the MPCC chief also paid a patient hearing as the victims narrated their grievances.

Talking to reporters on the sideline of the visit, Meghachandra alleged that evicting the houses by giving a short notice of 24 hours was an act of abusing power. “Even if they were illegal occupants, enough time to vacate the place should be given”, he also said. “The inhuman act of the government has rendered 69 families. They should be provided adequate compensation from the government side,” the MPCC leader demanded. He also said that the state government should not remain silent after taking actions against the government officials allegedly involved in the allocation of pattas at the “reserved forest areas”.

During the visit to the relief camp being opened at Lilong Haoreibi College at Lilong, the MPCC team provided food and other daily needed items besides water storage tanks. The MPCC team also visited other relief camps opened at Waithou and heard their grievances.

Later, the MPCC president expressed his strong dissatisfaction when no relief material was provided from the government side till date.
