The Congress party in Manipur is also all set to join the nationwide agitations against farm bills which were passed recently by Parliament amid ruckus.
The Congress has been launching nationwide agitations against the bills. It has also initiated a campaign to collect two crore signatures of farmers and the poor against these proposed legislations.
A sit-in protest will be staged at Congress Bhavan in Imphal on October 2 to register a strong objection to the three new farm sector bills, a press release of Kishan Congress of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) signed by its chairman Laitonjam Thoiba informed.
The sit-in protest to be staged will strictly adhere to COVID-19 protocols and other guidelines issued by the government. It is being planned as a part of the nationwide protests against the controversial bills, it stated.
The party will also observe ‘Kishan Mazdoor Bachao Divas’ (Save farmers and farm labourers), with the demand for immediate withdrawal of the bills, it informed.
Leaders of the state Congress including MPCC president M Oken, former chief minister O Ibobi Singh and CWC member and former deputy chief minister Gaikhangam and other party leaders will take part in the protest, it added.
The three farm sector bills which were recently passed by the Parliament are Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill 2020, Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Bill 2020 and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2020.
While protesting against the bills, the opposition Congress alleged that the bills were passed in violation of the “rich parliamentary tradition” of the country.
The party alleged that the laws will make farmers “dependent” and leave them at the mercy of big corporates.
