Imphal: The Manipur State Council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Thursday said the Union budget presented by Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman for 2023-24 was “anti-people” and nothing for the poor.

Addressing a press conference at Irawat Bhavan here today, the Manipur CPI leaders said that the budget has given no relief to the poor and middle class people but a boon for the corporates.

CPI Manipur State Council assistant secretary, M Joykumar alleged that the budget betrayed the hopes of the vast majority of the people “as the budget reduced the allocation for MGNREGA and the cut in food and fertilizer subsidies”.

He pointed out that the budget did not include any provision for taking up welfare works for the unemployed youths.

The CPI leader also alleged that to reduce the government expenditure, the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre cut the subsidies in food and fertilizers with main beneficiaries being the poor and working class people.

He said that the budget that focuses on health and education sectors and allocation of more funds for the upliftment of poor and working class people is considered to be a good budget.

The CPI is against the budget and the party is ready to launch various forms of movement against the Union budget.

Former state CPI secretary, L Sotinkumar observed a high cut in the allocation of funds for the implementation of various schemes for the welfare of the weaker and underprivileged sections of the society.

The budget also did not reflect any cut in the tax levied from the essential commodities even as it gives further tax concessions to the rich. Besides, there is no new policy for employment generation, he added.

Other leaders of the party who attended the press conference also pointed out alleged flaws in the budget and said that the budget will make the poor suffer and make the rich richer.
