Ukhrul: Designer Robert Naorem, the state director of Miss Universe Manipur, has taken a bold step by announcing the withdrawal of the ‘Best National Costume’ award, which was given to Danube Kangjam, a contestant from the state, at the recently held Miss Universe India 2024. The award was based on popular vote.
Expressing disappointment over the selection of the top 20 contestants in the pageant, the renowned designer took to Instagram, saying, “I wish we hadn’t received the national costume award. Instead, Danube being in the top 20 would have made us much happier.”

Robert Naorem, who believes Danube Kangjam deserved a place in the top 20, stated that the people of Manipur are unhappy with the selection process. He further declared the withdrawal of the award, saying, “I withdraw my Best National Costume by popular choice category.”
Despite the outcome, Danube Kangjam, Miss Universe Manipur 2024, remains optimistic. She responded to the designer’s post, saying, “Dear @robertnaoremstudio, I promise I will work on myself, and we will come back stronger next time and make Manipur even more proud. Thank you.”

Following Naorem’s declaration, many in the region who believed Danube Kangjam performed exceptionally well expressed their disappointment with her exclusion from the top 20.
While extending solidarity to Danube Kangjam and designer Robert Naorem, the people in the region has also questioned the fairness and transparency in the judging process of the national beauty contest.
