Imphal: Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh on Wednesday alleged that the country’s democracy is at stake under the BJP-led NDA rule.

Addressing the 138th foundation day of the Indian National Congress (INC) held at Congress Bhavan in Imphal, Manipur former chief minister O Ibobi Singh alleged that in the last eight years’ rule of the NDA, they even attacked the judiciary and media.

“Anyone who stands against the government is put in jail. Not enough with this, they are interfering with the independent functioning of the judiciary and freedom of press,” he also alleged.

“If they continue such attacks, what will be the fate of the democracy of the country,” he stated.

Ibobi then said that the primary objective of the Congress party is to save democracy and integrity of the country as well as Manipur.

“Our stand is very clear. India cannot be disintegrated, Manipur cannot be disintegrated. Our ideology is that the democracy of the country must be protected by concerted efforts,” he further said.

“The BJP and other parties in the NDA are criticizing and attacking the Congress party non-stop. However, the Congress will give a befitting reply at appropriate time and at an appropriate forum,” the three times chief minister of the state said.

Also addressing on the occasion, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra urged the people not to remain silent out of fear when the government is being run by the way the BJP is doing.

Time has come to voice against the wrongdoings of the government, he also said.

“Where has the anti-corruption cell which was set up by the incumbent BJP-led government in the state gone?” he asked. The cell was set up only to eyewash the people, he also said.
