Imphal, June 15: A tense situation gripped on Sunday morning in a locality in Imphal East district after a land dispute between villagers turned violent.

Police confirmed that the incident happened around 10 a.m. when a Meitei farmer from Leitanpokpi arrived with a tractor to plough a paddy field in Sadu Lampak, near a Kuki village. Police said some Kuki villagers confronted him, claiming the land did not belong to him.

Soon after, Meitei residents from nearby areas reached the spot, and tensions escalated.

Videos circulating on social media show both groups confronting each other. In some clips, people from both sides can be seen throwing stones at each other. They also used slingshots.

Security forces, including the Additional SP of Imphal East and paramilitary personnel, were already at the location. Additional reinforcements, led by the district SP, were later sent to strengthen control.

To disperse the people, security forces fired tear gas shells and mock bombs.

“No casualties have been reported,” police confirmed. “The situation is currently under control, and additional forces have been deployed as a precaution.”

Authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm and not to trust unverified social media posts.
