Manipur Govt & Oriental College hosts Mass Clean-Up Drive against Plastic Pollution

Ukhrul, April 16: The Eco-Club and NSS Units of Oriental College, in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur, organised a Clean-Up Program and Awareness Drive on the ban of single-use plastics today at the Oriental College Campus, Imphal. The event was part of a statewide enforcement campaign to eliminate plastic waste and promote sustainable alternatives.

The program was officially launched by Dr. S. Ranjit Singh, Principal of Oriental College, who emphasised the urgent need to curb plastic pollution for a healthier environment. Around 150 participants, including teachers, non-teaching staff, and students, joined the initiative, including M. Lokendro Singh, Vice President, Oriental College Teachers’ Association, Dr. G. Ranita Devi, Dean of Arts, Dr. Wormila, Dean of Science. Dr. Rajkumar Imosana Singh, Eco-Club Convenor, who delivered the keynote address on the environmental hazards of single-use plastics.

The drive included clean-up activities across the college premises; awareness sessions on the harmful effects of plastic waste; discussions on sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics.

In a similar effort, Imphal College conducted a “Plastic-Free Zone” campaign on Tuesday. Other institutions, including, Maharaj Bodhchandra College (Palace Gate), Modern College (Porompat, Imphal East), Kha-Manipur College are set to organise similar drives in the coming days as part of the state’s intensified enforcement of the plastic ban.
